iArmory 0.7a Released! (June 18th, 2008// 3:34pm)

I’m proud to announce the release of iArmory 0.7a. With this version comes many commonly requested features, such as full item stats and a webclip icon! Additionally, I’ve added another 100 testers to the testing group, increasing the total tester count to 500. If you applied for testing, please check your e-mail inbox.

If you want to request a new feature, or have an idea for something that should be added or changed, or found a bug and want to report it, as of version 0.7a, I’m going to request that you all use Mantis. Mantis is a bug tracking tool that I’m going to be using from now onwards to keep track of all changes to iArmory. This has a few benefits.

  1. You can see what’s coming soon to iArmory by checking Mantis for fixed or resolved issues. You now know what to expect with each new release.
  2. You can view issues and ideas posted by other testers, and comment on them to voice your opinion, or provide additional information.
  3. You now have an easy way to keep track of how things are changing. If you find an issue or suggestion that interests you, you can click on [Monitor Issue] and you will be sent e-mail updates whenever a change is made (a comment is posted, or the issue has been fixed/resolved).
  4. You can now make sure that all your bug reports and feature requests get straight to me! Most of what is in iArmory now is in there thanks to testers such as yourself, and communicating with me is the best way to get what you want into iArmory. I’ve already gotten some fantastic ideas from other testers that are going to be added in future versions. To give you an example, I originally wasn’t planning on adding item stats, but since so many people expressed an interest in it, they were added in 0.6a! Similarly, full item enchants and gem information was added in 0.7a, as many of you voiced your opinion and let me know that’s what you wanted to see!

To access Mantis, simply go to http://www.array0.com/mantis/ on your home computer, and make an account. Then just click on the link in the e-mail it sends you, fill out your full name and set a password, and you’re all set to go! It’s a painless procedure, and shouldn’t take you more than a minute or two to do. Now you can login to Mantis and report a new issue, request another feature, start monitoring issues reported by others, or leaving comments on existing issues! I do greatly appreciate any input you have to provide.

The full changelog for version 0.7a is as follows:

  • [Miscellaneous] Implemented a Mantis bug/feature request tracking system for iArmory. Click “Coming Soon” or “About iArmory” for more information (and a link).
  • [Miscellaneous] Added a webclip icon for the home screen (thanks Steven W. Smith)
  • [Player Lookup] Replaced the long and cumbersome realm list with an easy to use player search feature.
  • [Player Lookup] A divide by zero error has been fixed causing those with 0 arena games played to return a white page.

Kindness in WoW (June 10th, 2008// 3:48pm)

How do you treat other players in WoW?

It’s a simple question, but one that you’ll find has very varying answers, and answers that vary wildly depending one’s situation. How do you treat someone who randomly whispered you asking for help with their class? How about someone who’s asking for a spare gold? What if you’re a mage and they’re asking for food or water? If you see a player nearby you pull a few too many mobs than they can handle, do you pitch in a helping hand and save the day? What if they’re part of the opposite faction?

Overall, kindness in WoW falls in one of two categories: random kindness that isn’t prompted, and kindness that’s done as a reply to a request. The latter is a topic I can talk about for ages, as it involves everything from friends asking, to a guildmate asking, to random players asking. Not to mention all the things they can ask for. So let’s talk about the former: random kindness.

Random Kindness

I don’t know about you, but one thing that always brings a smile to my face is when people I don’t know — complete strangers — act kindly towards me, without me having to ask. Has it ever happened to you when you were a lowbie and didn’t have many abilities at your disposal, and while trying to make a risky pull, you accidentally pulled more mobs than you can handle? Now, more importantly, have you ever been in the situation where some random passerby helped you out and between the two of you, you managed to clear off all the mobs you pulled and stayed alive? How did you feel? Did it encourage you to do something similar yourself in a similar situation, but on the opposite side?

When I was a lowbie on my first character, my Mage, something happened that I remember to this very day, and it’s something that really affected the way I play the game. I was level 18 or so, and just about to graduate from The Barrens (yech, Barrens, I know). I was doing that annoying quest where you have to steal silver back from some raptors who decided they needed it for their shiny metal nest (Stolen Silver’s the name), and realized as I got there that the raptors were all symbiotic creatures and were always in groups of two. I managed to get through the first few groups of them by sheer luck and with a mage’s wealth of “oh sh*t” buttons, but the last pull was a difficult one. Right next to the silver is a group of three raptors. One is a little bit father away from the rest, and I knew with clever planning I could pull him separately from the other two. So I targeted him, backed up, and prepared to fire… and aggroed the other group of three raptors right behind me, just as my shot fired off and aggroed the first group of three. I now had six very angry raptors after me, and my escape was blocked off because the raptors on the way out had respawned.

Teh Raptorz

Of course, being a mage, they ripped right through me and before I knew it I was staring at my toon’s body lying there on the ground. With a groan we’re all familiar with, I reached over to the [Release Spirit] button and prepared to press it. A second later, I found myself alive right near where I died, at the feet of a level 30ish shaman. I was amazed. This random player, who I had never seen nor spoken before, had apparently noticed I died, and had stopped in the middle of their journey to give me a rez. I whispered them a “thank you”, and they just said “no problem” and ran off on their merry way. However, that random act of kindness has stayed with me ever since. Just the other day I was doing my Quel’danas dailies and saw a resto shaman get eaten alive by some blood elves just before I could get to him and help. Being a druid, the only thing I could do was to throw him a battle rez (which cost me a reagent). He was shocked that I would spend money on a complete stranger. But that’s just the person I’ve become, and it’s something I don’t mind doing, especially knowing the smile it brings to the other person’s face. It varies per server, but I’ve found the WoW population as a whole is mostly rude, including a few who go out of their way to steal a node/chest that you just cleared a mob for, and stealing quest mobs/items right in front of your face! However, I find that it’s those rare situations where someone goes out of their way to be nice to you, that make all the difference.

What About You?

What about you? Do you have any stories about times when someone you didn’t know was kind to you? How about something you’ve done? Let me know in the comments!

iArmory v0.6a Released! (June 8th, 2008// 1:23pm)

I’ve been hard at work these past few days adding as many features into iArmory as I could think of, in anticipation of a public release. Most of what everyone’s been asking for (the most requested features) have been added in this version. The full changelog is below:

  • [ADDED] Added full listning for base stats, melee stats, ranged stats, spell stats, and defense stats, as well as resistances. Certain items (marked in black) can be clicked on for more information.
  • [ADDED] Added a list of all the buffs currently affecting a player. You can click on a buff to get its full description.
  • [ADDED] You can now click on any item to get its full stats!
  • [ADDED] Each item is now colored appropriately depending on its rarity.
  • [ADDED] Item information is now cached, so load times will be significantly faster after the initial query.
  • [ADDED] Added a row with a player’s lifetime honorable kills.
  • [ADDED] Added rows for health and rage/mana/energy and highlighted the rows with their respective colors.
  • [FIXED] Fixed a bug where viewing multiple characters in a row would result in item stats not properly loading.
  • [FIXED] Items with random enchantments (XXX of …) will now properly be displayed.
  • [FIXED] If the armory is down or otherwise unavailable, an error message is now properly shown instead of just a white screen.
  • [FIXED] An invalid name/realm will now properly show an error message instead of just a white screen.
  • [FIXED] Fixed a bug where the realm dropdown list would only show the first 300 realms (cutting off at R).
  • [FIXED] EU players can now properly load their item information.

For all those who requested to be in the alpha test, please realize I got over 2000 e-mails (since i got linked to from websites such as Wow Insider. I went through each e-mail, and depending on several criteria (including about 200 which were randomly chosen), I’ve selected about 350-400 testers for iArmory. If you are one of these testers, you should have gotten an e-mail to the e-mail address you provided recently. You will be given the link to iArmory, as well as the full information for accessing and using it, later tonight.

Additionally, a few people (10 lucky randomly chosen testers), as well as anyone who is a Twitter follower of mine and saw my tweet and sent me an e-mail with the code word when I asked for it got a front row seat, and are actually playing around with iArmory now!
